The Germans had special police guards around the perimeter. Jews were allowed to travel the streets but only by two wooden bridges that were connected to the main streets.(Lodz)When the out break during World War II happened the Jewish Community of Lodz Poland's population was around 200,000 and it was the 2nd lagest community in
Poland.(Lodz)German troops took over Lodz after the Germans invaded Poland on September 1, 1939. The Germans renames the city Littzmann, afeter the general Karl Littzmann. Litzmann was the person that had found and captured Lodz in WW I. At the beginning of February 1940 the Germans created a ghetto in the northeastern section of Lodz. 160,000 jewish people were forced to move to a small area. 160,000 people is only about 1/3 of there population. In May of 1940 the Germand forced the Jews to work in factories that they had buit in the the ghettos. By 1942 there was almost 100 factories in the ghetto. The bigger factories made textiles, and uniforms for the German army. Mordechai Chaim Rumkowski was a chairman in the Jewish counsil in Lodz ghetto. He wanted to prevent distruction in the ghetto by making it productive and to pass time.(Lodz)Since there was so many people in such a small space there wasnt any farmland to grow food for them to eat, so hunger quickly became a problem. The Nazi insisted that the ghetto has to pay for everything in it so they needed money. A Jewish man named Rumkoski knew that the nazi needed them for labor and that they were usefull to the nazi's so he made it so the ghetto always had food. When you got food it depended on how much work you did. If you did little work then you got little food. Soon the rations wiht food began to get low. Some of the food spoiled and was not edible anymore. (The Lodz Ghetto) Rumkoski is a Jewish man that the Nazi chosen to be the elder of the Jews. He was 62 and he believed that they could get through this. He started many

programs like a prst office and sewage clean up. When he made post office he also made a stamp with his face on it. There was a sewege program because they didnt have one inside the ghetto so Rumkowski made a program to get rid of all the waste.(The Lodz Ghetto) In the Winter of 1941 Lodz found out that the Nazi's were transfering 20,00 more Jews to Lodz. Rumkowski couldnt do anything because the Nazi's had already made a desicion. People were getting transported every day from September to October, with almost 1,000 people a day. The new comers didnt know how bad the ghettos were. The new comers had shoes, clothes, and reserves of clothes. To add to the 20,00 new Jews, the Nazi's forced them to take in 5,000 more Gypsies. Rumkowski made a speach about it on October 14, 1941.(The Lodz Ghetto)
On January 6,1942 the Nazis started to deport the Jews, Gypsies, ect. to the Chelmno death camp.

Once they got there they were put into trucks and gassed with carbon monoxide. almost 1,00 people were leaving each day. By January 19, 1942 10,003 people had been deported. After a couple of weeks the Nazis demanded more deportations. They decided to make make it easier they started to give less and less food portions to people. They promised people that if they went to the transports they would get a meal. From February 22 - April 2, 1942 34,073 people were transported to Chelmno. Almost right after the Germans demanded more deportees. This time the Germans wanted newcomers that came to Lodz from Reich. In September 1942 another deportation request was sent out. This time everyone unable to work was deported.
